Other Role-Playing Game Systems

The most well-known role-playing game system is Dungeons & Dragons, but there are many other role-playing game systems with different kinds of worlds that do not only draw inspiration from fantasy. If you prefer dystopian futurism, you can play Cyberpunk or Shadowrun, while those with a penchant for horror might try Call of Cthulhu or Vaesen. Below, you can find information about several of the most well-known and popular role-playing game systems.

Tales from the Loop

In Tales from the Loop, you enter a world filled with machines and scrap metal. If you put your ear to the ground, you can hear the heartbeat of the Loop - the spinning of the gravitron. In this role-playing game in the style of E.T and Stranger Things, you play as teenagers solving mysteries in the '80s. If you prefer the '90s, you can instead try your hand at Tales from the Flood, set in the same world - but this time you can die.

Cyberpunk RED

Cyberpunk RED takes place in a futuristic version of our own world. The game is most often set in Night City, which is also known from the video game Cyberpunk 2077. The world of Cyberpunk is filled with neon lights, floating cars, and people with cybernetic implants. In Cyberpunk RED, players must navigate both the physical and digital worlds as they rebel against the system and the mega corporations that rule society with an iron fist.

Shadowrun RPG: Sixth World

In Shadowrun, players are 'shadowrunners', people who live on the fringes of society, and who use cyberware, magic, hacking, and other tricks to solve various tasks when they are out on 'runs' in the shadows. The Shadowrun setting is unique, both in its way of combining fantasy and high tech, but also in that the world is 'alive' in the sense that over the last 30 years Shadowrun has existed, the timeline has similarly advanced by 30 years.

Fallout: the Roleplaying Game

"War. War never changes." - Fallout the Roleplaying Game takes place in the same world as the well-known video games. In this alternative version of our world, nuclear war has almost wiped out everything and the few survivors left must now try to survive in the wasteland that remains. With its mix of post-apocalyptic futurism and 1950s culture, Fallout creates a unique survival RPG.

The Witcher: the Roleplaying Game

The Witcher: the Roleplaying Game allows you to tell your own story in The Witcher world! Embark on adventures across the continent, interact with living legends, and influence the politics of the land. Fight in the brutal and terrible Third Nifgaardian War. Or play your own adventure, while trying to avoid death and mutilation!

Dune: Adventures in the Imperium

In Dune: Adventures in the Imperium RPG, you are further in the future than you ever imagined, where fear is what kills most - so be sure to keep your thoughts in check. Take your characters on an adventure through Frank Herbert's Sci-fi masterpiece, play as elite agents working for noble houses and families, while navigating the political structures of the Imperium.

Vaesen Nordic Horror

Somewhere in Scandinavia, a group of individuals gather in a villa, assigned to them because of their shared mysterious trait. They can see what others cannot: namely the supernatural beings that lurk among the citizens in the dark Scandinavian forests. In Vaesen, players take on the role of investigators with "The Sight", to solve mysteries in the local area caused by various beings based on Nordic mythology and folklore.

Alien: the Roleplaying Game

"In space no one can hear you scream." - Based on the well-known film universe and with the same focus on horror and isolation. Alien the Roleplaying Game pits players against the horrific xenomorphs as they try to survive the overwhelming emptiness of space. If you are a fan of the movies or just a fan of horror RPGs, there is plenty of entertainment to be found here.

Stargate SG-1 RPG

Based on the first six seasons of the Stargate Series. Players become part of the Stargate program, where they are sent on missions to different planets around the galaxy, to explore or fight the Goa'uld.

Mörk Borg

Mörk Borg is a grim old school role-playing game with a simple rule set, so you can get started quickly. The game has a dark apocalyptic world, where death and destruction are the whole point. A fact the creators have hammered home by including a list of recommended death metal bands to listen to while playing.

Forbidden Lands

Forbidden Lands is a modern version of an old-fashioned role-playing game. Here, players are not necessarily noble heroes, but more often individuals on the fringes of society, trying to survive in a world filled with monsters and magic.

Warhammer Fantasy RPG

Warhammer Fantasy RPG: Are you ready for an exciting adventure into the Warhammer Fantasy world? Here you can experience late-fantasy at its best, a world where magic is taboo and chaos lurks around every corner. In Warhammer Fantasy, players do not play as great heroes, but ordinary citizens who suddenly find themselves thrown into horrific situations.

Warhammer 40K: Wrath & Glory

Warhammer 40K - Wrath and Glory: takes place in the Warhammer 40K universe – the game offers science fiction, spiced with elements of fantasy. If you've always wanted to play a Space Marine or an Imperial Guardsman, then this is the role-playing game you should try.

Warhammer: Soulbound

In Soulbound, you take on the role of one of the god Sigmar's chosen warriors, and travel around "the Mortal Realms" to combat the forces that worship Chaos, Death, and destruction. Based on Warhammer Age of Sigmar. Soulbound has a very simple game system, making it easy to get started.

Vampire the Masquerade
