Stargate SG-1 is a sci-fi tabletop role-playing game based on the popular TV series, where you take on the role of a member of Stargate Command. As an SG team member, you and your teammates will go on missions, guided by a Gatemaster, in the fight against the Goa'uld and other threats. In the Stargate universe, humanity has discovered the existence of Stargates. Machines created millions of years ago by a race now known as "the Ancients." These machines allow for the opening of portals to other planets around the galaxy and have enabled Stargate Command to acquire new technology and forge alliances with other races. However, it has also opened the door to hostile races such as the Goa'uld, who under the leadership of so-called System Lords have created a galactic empire which they rule with an iron fist.
The Stargate universe is perfectly suited for tabletop role-playing games, as the game's portals allow for travel to a new location each time one steps through them. This provides endless possibilities for what the players might encounter and the types of conflicts, mysteries, or intrigues they can get involved in. In this way, the game is exceptionally well-suited for "one-shots": small scenarios that can be completed in a single gaming session.
The game is based on the D&D 5th Edition Open Gaming License and plays out like a kind of verbal improvised drama, where the players, in collaboration with the Gatemaster, create a story with the players' characters in the leading roles. It is the Gatemaster's role to control the rest of the characters and enemies the players meet, as well as to create and elaborate on the planets and locations the players visit. It is important to keep in mind that the player and Gatemaster are not against each other even though the Gatemaster controls the game's enemies. Tabletop role-playing games like Stargate SG-1 are primarily about creating an exciting narrative together.
Since the system is based on the D&D 5th Edition Open Gaming License, people who have tried D&D before will be able to get started with Stargate quickly. However, there are also plenty of changes that make the game its own and try to emulate the feeling of being part of a TV series:
