The King's Dilemma is a 'narrative legacy' game where players are advisors to the king, coming from different noble houses. Each round, a card from the dilemma stack is revealed, and players must negotiate a solution and ultimately decide the dilemma through a vote. During the voting, power shifts between the players' noble houses depending on how many votes they use for the choice, but votes used cannot be used in subsequent votes. Each player has their own secret agenda.
The outcomes of the dilemmas affect the kingdom's status and influence its resources. The King's Dilemma is a Legacy game (like Pandemic Legacy and Gloomhaven), and the results of the votes are recorded with stickers, so the outcomes also affect later games. Throughout the game, envelopes and boxes containing new materials and new dilemmas are opened, and the story in the game follows one of the various storylines, depending on the choices that players negotiate and vote for.
Each round, you draw a card from the bottom of the Dilemma pile and experience the game story unfold. Each card is unique and will present a problem (or dilemma) that the Council must solve on behalf of the king.
You will need to discuss, negotiate, and make decisions that will shape the game's story and determine the fate of the Kingdom of Ankist. Each time a dilemma card is resolved, it is permanently removed from the Dilemma deck. Occasionally, however, your decisions will result in the addition of completely new cards to the pile, unlocking new events that will have an impact in the future as a consequence of your decisions.
You will need to keep the kingdom running while also seeking an advantage for your own house; this power struggle can lead the realm to war, famine, or riots, or it can create prosperity and well-being.
It all depends on your choices! However, every decision has consequences: what is good for the realm as a whole may be bad for your house. Will you act for the good of all, or will you only think of yourself?
