Build a stellar empire through explorations and conquests, through colonizations and trade, through the development of technology and the production of goods. There are many paths to becoming the dominant empire, but it happens in a race with the other empires, and in Race for the Galaxy, there can only be one winner.
Race for the Galaxy is a card game about establishing interstellar empires. In a race with the other players, the goal is to build an empire before the others. This is done through an interplay of colonization and conquest of planets and the development of technology.
A game is played over several rounds. At the start of a round, each player simultaneously and secretly chooses an action card and places it face down in front of themselves.
When all players have done this, they reveal these action cards face up. Then the players perform the chosen phases in order (I: Explore; II: Develop; III: Settle; IV: Consume; V: Produce), skipping any phase that is not chosen by at least one player.
Each phase has an action that is performed by all players. Additionally, the players who chose the phase receive a bonus.
The bonus for an action either modifies it (such as reducing costs or doubling the VP gained) or is added on top (such as drawing a card afterward or the option to sell a good).
After all phases chosen that round have been executed, each player must discard down to ten cards in hand and then take back the action card they played that round.
Subsequent rounds are performed in the same way until an end of the game is reached.
The game ends at the end of the round (including discarding) when:
The player with the most points wins.
