Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is a standalone game in the Carcassonne series set in the Stone Age. Just like in other Carcassonne games, players take turns placing tiles to build a landscape and score points by placing their meeples (pieces) on the board. The game ends when the player with the most points wins.
In this version, there are forests, rivers, lakes, and meadows instead of cities, roads, and fields. Meeples function differently depending on where they are placed: hunters in meadows, gatherers in forests, or fishermen by rivers. Players also have huts that they can place by rivers or lakes to collect fish from the entire river system.
