Ravensburger is headquartered in Ravensburg in southern Germany, and makes puzzles and board games for children and adults of all ages. The hallmark of Ravensburger is the high quality of both the motifs and the pieces.
The company was founded way back in 1883 by Otto Robert Maier. Initially, the company published instructional manuals for craftsmen and architects, and in 1884 he published his first board game "Journey around the world". For a long time, they primarily produced books and other printed materials.
In 1964, Ravensburger began producing puzzles and established subsidiaries in Austria, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and England in the same year. In 1977, the company was divided into a department for books and games publishing.
Ravensburger is especially known for its puzzles, with fun and beautiful motifs for both children and adults. The motifs range widely, from Disney characters, landscapes, animals, and much more.
In 2010, Ravensburger set the world record for the world's largest puzzle, with their "Double Retrospect", which measured 5.18 x 1.82 meters and had to be assembled with 32,256 pieces. Ravensburger's largest puzzle today is "Memorable Disney Moments" with 40,320 pieces.
One of Ravensburger's innovative inventions is their series of Exit Puzzles, best described as an escape room in puzzle form. Each Exit Puzzle has its own story, where the player must try to escape a specific situation. First, the puzzle itself must be assembled, but this is a special challenge, as the motif is not identical to the image on the box. Subsequently, with the help of the riddle book, you must try to solve 8 different mysteries on the puzzle.
Something very unique is a new cutting technology that has made it possible to create pieces that can be assembled in several different places, thereby forming new elements in the motif.
Ravensburger has also produced several classic board games for both children and adults, e.g., Labyrinth from 1986, where players must navigate around a constantly changing labyrinth, while collecting their unique treasures. The game has won several awards, including the Mensa Select Award and the Spiel des Jahres prize for the most beautiful game.
Ravensburger has also released many solid games under their "Alea" label. Here we find, for example, Puerto Rico and San Juan, where players must produce, trade, and ship various goods, and Castles of Burgundy, which is one of the most influential games in recent times.
