Everything worth knowing about football cards

Just like Magic and Pokémon cards, football cards are a coveted collectible among both football-interested children and adults. The cards typically consist of a picture of a player, the player's name, and club or national team. The cards may also contain additional information about the player such as their position on the field and statistics. Football cards are released in sets, with each set containing cards of many different players from a specific league or tournament.

The most popular brands of football cards are Topps and Panini. Among them, they have licenses for all the popular football leagues. Every year, Topps and Panini release new series of football cards based on the popular leagues and finals that are current. This also means that there is a great opportunity to customize one's collection depending on what one finds interesting. For example, one might focus on getting as large a collection as possible, or perhaps one would rather focus on a few specific series of cards.

What can football cards be used for?

In addition to being fun to collect, football cards can also be a good investment. Some football cards are very rare and can be valuable, especially if they have been signed by the player in question. Therefore, there are many football card collectors who are willing to pay large sums for the cards they are missing in their collection.

There are also many different ways to collect football cards. Some collectors prefer to collect cards from a specific league, while others prefer to collect cards of their favorite teams or players. Some collectors also only collect autographed cards, while others collect special editions of cards, such as gold cards or cards with a special finish.

Although the cards are primarily used as collectibles, they can actually also be played with. Both Panini AdrenalynXL and Topps Match Attax give all players values for attack, defense, and control, which are used during the game to score goals. The game becomes further complicated as one must also think about their team setup and the players' positions on the field.

What series of football cards are there?

The most popular football cards are produced by Italian Panini and American Topps, which share the licenses for all the most popular football leagues. All the major national leagues have an annually updated release while series for the World Cup and European Championship typically come out every four years.

Roughly speaking, releases of football cards can be divided into two categories:

  1. The most widespread are the type that can also be found in supermarkets and kiosks - series such as Topps Match Attax, Panini Adrenalyn XL, and various series of stickers. These are produced in large editions and typically do not have great value for collectors.
  2. The other category, called hobby, is produced in limited editions and is only found in specialty stores like Card Collective. In these, you can find serial-numbered cards, autographs, and relics. The price is typically a bit higher per card but in return, the cards also have higher value for collectors.

Here follows a list of the annual hobby series that Topps and Panini release, which we expect to have in stock at Card Collective:

What types of football cards are there?

When you really dive into the world of football cards, you encounter many different cards and special expressions that describe them.

Here is an overview of different types of cards you may encounter:

  • Rookie cards: A card that shows a football player in their first season as a professional player. Rookie cards are particularly sought after by collectors, as they are naturally more rare because they are only made in the player's first season.
  • Base: The standard card in a series of football cards. Base cards are the most common cards in a series and usually contain a bit of info about the player such as their name, team, and position.
  • Parallel: These are cards that are a variation of a base/standard card. For example, with a different picture, a different color tone, or a shiny finish.
  • Refractor: These are cards that are made with a special coating that reflects light in a pattern. Refractor cards can be found in different colors and editions and often look very "cool".
  • Insert: These are cards that are inserted into booster packs at a lower rate than standard cards. Inserts can be made of special material or have a special finish and often have a theme, such as team logos or legendary players.
  • Autograph cards: These are cards that are signed by the player in question. Autographed cards are among the most rare and sought after cards and can be very valuable.
  • Matchworn: Also known as "jersey" or "Memorabilia" cards, are a type of card that has an inserted piece of a jersey that the player has worn during a game
  • Numbered: These cards are numbered, so you can see exactly how many of them exist. For example, it might say 3/75 which indicates that there are only 75 of this card in the world. Autograph and matchworn cards are often also numbered.

Which football cards are most valuable?

It is difficult to say exactly how much a given card is worth. But here are some of the factors that play a role. Old football cards, for example, tend to be more rare, which can affect the price a lot:

  • Card rarity: The rarer a card is the more valuable it is. If it is numbered, it is of course more valuable the fewer cards there are in the number series. 1/1 cards are of course the most valuable as they are unique.
  • Signed/matchworn: Cards with an autograph or a piece of the player's jersey are something special and seen as more valuable. The more colors, or the more of a logo you can see of the jersey, the more valuable the card is.
  • Player popularity: It goes without saying that people most want to get their hands on cards with their favorite players. Therefore, the most popular players are also much more sought after and valuable.
  • Rookie cards: A player's rookie card will always be more valuable because it is more rare
  • Card condition: Even the smallest scratches or nicks on the edge can reduce the card's value. Only the most perfect cards are worth a lot of money.

If you get a valuable card in hand and want to preserve its value, we recommend that you take good care of it by protecting it in an inner sleeve before gently placing it in a folder or toploader. If you take good care of your cards, you can potentially sell them for a lot of money later. The world's most expensive football card is difficult to name, but the most expensive card ever sold through PWCC is a Pele Rookie card from 1958. So old football cards can definitely be worth a lot of money if you have taken good care of them.
