Adventures and Role-Playing Games

In these games, you mostly take on the role of a hero who embarks on adventures down labyrinth-like passages to plunder all the treasures you can get close to. But to get out unscathed, you must overcome all sorts of dangers, whether they come in the form of hostile warriors, monsters, demons, or horrors from outer space!

The games in this category mainly fall into the group of games also known as "Dungeon Crawlers". This is a special subgroup of games, inspired by the classic role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, where heroes venture down into underground caves and dungeons in search of honor and treasures. In this type of game, the game board is often a series of rooms and corridors that try to replicate dark caves, mysterious castles, or space stations. The theme can vary a lot but mostly leans towards fantasy or science fiction. The individual rooms and corridors can usually be assembled in countless ways. Often there are missions that tell how the rooms should be placed. But it's not all just about fighting enemies; exploring the map and discovering what hides in the farthest corners is often just as big a part of the games.

Players take on the role of their own hero, trying to achieve their goals while fighting through hordes of opponents. The heroes are often very different, each with their own special abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. As in the traditional role-playing games they are inspired by, the cast of heroes often consists of the classic archetypes from role-playing games: The strong warrior, who deals great damage and has lots of life. The wizard, who masters powerful spells but is physically weak. Or the Archer, who survives by always keeping a distance from the opponents. In many of the games in this category, heroes can be upgraded by finding or buying new equipment, weapons, and abilities. And it will surely be necessary if the heroes are to survive the enemies, who grow in both strength and number.

Adventure and role-playing games work in one of three ways. All against one, all against all, or cooperation (CO-OP). In all against one, there is a single player who controls the monsters in the game and tries to prevent the remaining players from reaching their goals. The good thing about this type of game is that the heroes can't easily run around the enemies, as they are controlled by another player.

In pure cooperation, the monsters are controlled by a system built into the game. The advantage of this type of game is that all players either win or lose at the same time, and there is not a single player who has to be chosen to play against the others. The goal is thus to outmaneuver the game, as you can mostly predict how the enemies will react. In all against all, the heroes must try to achieve their goals, no matter what; preferably at the expense of the other heroes. This is perfect for the more competitive players.
