HeaderMore about CatanBlockText2
Catan was developed by the experienced and successful German game designer Klaus Teuber. The game was originally released under the name The Settlers of Catan, but is sold today simply as 'Catan'. The game is tremendously popular, and its success has led to a whole series of expansions, different editions, and spin-offs. Since 1995, Catan has been translated into 40 different languages, and over 30 million games have been sold. Although the game has a number of years under its belt, it still holds its commercial strength today.
The game takes place in a medieval universe, and the story begins as the players, after a long and arduous sea voyage, finally sight land. The ships reach the coast, and the new land area is christened 'Catan'. However, you find out that your population is not the only group of explorers who have come to the island, and you must now compete for the right to land and the scarce resources found on the beautiful, geographically diverse island surrounded by sea. Hills produce brick, forests produce wood, mountains produce ore, fields produce oats, and finally: grasslands produce wool.
The goal is to build roads and expand your territory with new villages, which can eventually become cities, to ultimately gain full dominion over Catan. Each village is worth one point, and each city gives two points. The player who first reaches ten points wins the 'Catan' game. If you need a specific resource to complete your building process, you must try to trade with your opponents. It's really about thinking strategically and founding your cities where the valuable resources are, and trading wisely and shrewdly. Then the probability of victory will be on your side! That is... if your opponents are not as cunning as you.
You can directly expand your base game with the following base game expansions:
Additionally, you can add these games with different scenarios directly to the base game:
It is also possible to purchase the expansion Catan – 5-6 players, which further allows you to expand with 'Seafarers', 'Cities and Knights', 'Traders and Barbarians', and 'Explorers and Pirates' for five to six players.
