Known as the 'British Expeditionary Force' (or abbreviated as 'B.E.F') during the early war period (1939-1940), they fought in North Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Asia after recovering from the evacuation at Dunkirk. Along with their allies, the British began to gain the upper hand - first with victories in Africa and Italy - and after D-Day in 1944, they returned to France and pushed the German army back through the European mainland to Germany, while in the Far East they fought the Japanese and pushed them back from the Indian border to eastern Burma.
