The Americans preferred light tanks over armored cars for reconnaissance, and the M5 light tanks were designed for just that. The biggest difference between the M5 and the previous vehicle was its Cadillac engine. This necessitated a redesign of the armor, and the opportunity was taken to improve the layout and distribution of the armor.
In the M5A1 version, the lower hull casting was sometimes up to 64 mm thick. Other improvements include wider access hatches, more internal space for the crew, and ammunition storage for 147 37 mm rounds. Production was limited as the introduction of the M24 light tank was imminent.
