The middle ranks of officers were almost inevitably drawn from the upper middle classes: educated in the public schools, imbued with the values of the empire, and permeated by a sense of confidence, duty, and determination that is hard to imagine today. An officer unit consists of one officer and up to two other soldiers who serve as his immediate companions.

The field medic gives the wounded soldier his best chance of surviving a serious injury and can ensure that lightly wounded soldiers are brought back to combat readiness as quickly as possible.
