Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying is based on the well-known and popular miniature game: Warhammer Fantasy. Unlike its source of inspiration, here you do not control large armies of warriors, but rather a single character, who is just trying to survive everyday life in this harsh world. If you have previously played the Warhammer Fantasy miniature game or read about the universe in some of the books from the Black Library, you will likely recognize many of the elements and locations described in the game's books. The game is primarily set in the empire of Karl Franz, a realm marked by intrigue and injustice, where one must have a pocket full of gold or know how to use a knife if one is to have a chance to live even somewhat comfortably. For everyone else, life is filled with danger and uncertainty, and it is primarily among these unfortunate fates that the players' characters will belong.

The game takes place as a kind of verbally improvised drama, where the players in collaboration with the Game Master create a story with the players' characters in the leading roles. It is the Game Master's role to control the rest of the people and monsters the players meet, as well as to create and elaborate the cities and locations the players visit. It is important to keep in mind that the player and Game Master are not against each other even though the Game Master controls the game's monsters. Tabletop role-playing games like Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay are primarily about creating an exciting narrative together.

Unlike many other fantasy role-playing games, players in Warhammer Fantasy are not to be mighty heroes. Instead, they should take on the roles of some of society's lowest citizens including beggars, fishermen, and grave robbers. However, one can also try out more exotic careers such as wizard's apprentice and mercenary. Likewise, one should not expect a plethora of fantastic races to choose from. Although it is possible to choose halflings, dwarves, and elves, the game is far more dominated by humans. This is also evident if one follows the game's race table, where you roll dice to determine what you will play as. Here there is a 90% chance that you end up as a human and only a 2% chance that you become an elf.

Even if you play as a mercenary, you are still very vulnerable, and in the Old World, combat can quickly lead to death or long-lasting injuries due to the tough combat system. It is not only the amount of damage that is important, but also where you are hit, as injuries are an important part of the game. This can be anything from broken bones to "involuntary amputations." Another dangerous element in the game is magic. Spells can be very useful in several situations, but it is always a gamble to use them, as there is always a chance that they backfire.

If you want to try your hand at Warhammer Fantasy RPG and just want to get started as quickly as possible, you can advantageously buy the starter set. The set collects everything you need including pre-made characters, dice, tokens, a map of the city of Ubersreik, two books containing a guide to Ubersreik and a pre-written adventure, as well as lots of extra accessories and tables for use during the game. The adventure in the starter set lasts about 2-3 sessions, but in addition, 10 smaller scenarios are included, which can be used to continue the story.
