Armies of the Imperium

The Imperium of Man is a vast, morally staggering totalitarian human empire, which is the core of Games Workshop's gothic sci-fi setting, Warhammer 40k.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war - this is one of 40k's few fundamental laws - and boy, oh boy, what a big, terribly complicated war it seems from the besieged Imperium's perspective!

The main armies in the Warhammer 40k Empire are:

• Space Marines
  You won't find them here, they have their own category here.
• Astra Militarum
  Astra Militarum, also known as the Imperial Guard, is the largest force in the galaxy. They are the primary combat force of the Imperium of Man and the first line of defense against the countless threats that endanger human existence in the 41st millennium. Read more about them here.
  
• Adeptus Mechanicus
  Adeptus Mechanicus is the official Imperial designation for Cult Mechanicus or Cult of the Machine on Mars - providing the empire with its scientists, engineers, and technicians. Read more about them here.
  
• Adeptus Custodes

• Adepta Sororitas/Sisters of Battle
  Adepta Sororitas, also called "the Sisterhood" in everyday speech, is a female division of the Imperium of Man's state church - the Ecclesiarchy, or more formally, the Adeptus Ministorum. Read more about them here.
