In the game, you are bird enthusiasts: Researchers, birdwatchers, ornithologists, and collectors! You will find, attract, and acquire the best birds for your wildlife reserves, and each bird brings a range of good and powerful combinations and traits to your habitats. The focus in the habitats is on creating growth. This can be done in several ways:

• The birds can get food by using the game's special dice
• The birds can lay eggs (the game includes egg miniatures in various colors)
• You can draw from the 170 unique bird cards and play them

The player with the most points overall wins the game. You can earn points from birds, bonus cards, goals, eggs, captured food, and stored birds.

How to play Wingspan

The game is played over four rounds. After a round is finished, there is a small scoring phase where points are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the item shown on the scoring token. After that, everyone gets back their action cubes minus one, the starting player marker moves on, and the next round is ready to begin.

On a player's turn, one can take one of four actions.

• Catching a bird: by paying the food cost of the bird.
• Gathering food: The first free space in the food row shows how much food you may take from the feeder. When there is only one type of food left, the player can choose to roll all the dice again.
• Getting the birds to lay eggs: The first free space in the egg-laying row shows how many eggs you get. Each bird has a number of eggs it can hold. Eggs must also be used when you want to place another or later bird in a row.
• Drawing cards: Here you can choose from the three shown, or you can draw one randomly from the deck. Here, the first free space also shows how many cards you may draw.

For the last three actions, once the main action is done, you activate all birds in the same row from right to left. This can give points, eggs, food, or more cards. Some birds activate when other players take a specific action.

When the fourth round is over, points are tallied, and the one with the most points for birds, eggs, and bonus cards wins.
