In Dune, you are the leader of one of six major factions. Each of them wants to control the most valuable resource in the universe - melange, the mysterious spice that can only be found on the planet Dune. As Duke Leto Atreides likes to say, "Everything pales in comparison to Melange. A handful is enough to buy a house on Tupile. It cannot be manufactured; it can only be harvested on Arrakis. It is unique and has genuine geriatric properties."

Without Melange, space travel is impossible. Only by consuming the addictive substance can Guild Steersmen experience visions of the future that enable them to find a safe path through hyperspace.
