The talk in the streets and taverns has been about the so-called death curse: a wasting disease that affects all who have been raised from the dead. The victims grow thinner and weaker with each passing day, slowly but steadily sliding towards the death they once denied.

When they finally succumb, they cannot be raised again - nor can others, regardless of whether they have been raised from the dead before. Temples and scholars of divine magic are unable to explain a curse that has affected the entire region and possibly the whole world.

The cause of this curse is a necromantic artifact called Soulmonger, which is located somewhere in Chult, a mysterious peninsula far to the south, surrounded by mountains and choked by rainforests.
