The Russian cavalry was the largest in Europe during the Crimean War and included more than sixty regiments organized into twenty cavalry divisions. Among the light cavalry units were the characteristic lancers – also known as Uhlans after the Prussian model.
The Russian lancers wore Polish-inspired uniforms with the iconic square czapka hats and long cloaks, which stood in sharp contrast to their more colorful British opponents. During campaigns, the headgear was often covered with oil-treated fabric to protect against the harsh weather.
Although training largely focused on parade exercises and formations rather than modern combat techniques, the Russian lancers still constituted an impressive force on the battlefield.
