The Russian cavalry was the largest in Europe during the Crimean War and included more than sixty regiments organized into twenty cavalry divisions. Among the light cavalry units were the characteristic lancers – also known as Uhlans after the Prussian model.
The Russian lancers wore Polish-inspired uniforms with the iconic square czapka hats and long cloaks, which stood in stark contrast to their more colorful British opponents. During campaigns, the headgear was often covered with oil-treated covers to protect against rain and harsh weather.
Like the Russian infantry, the cavalry's training was primarily focused on parade formations and maneuvers rather than modern combat techniques, but the lancers still constituted a formidable force on the battlefield.
