France was a central part of the alliance against Russia during the Crimean War and sought to limit Russian influence as well as maintain the balance of power in Europe. Therefore, France sent around 300,000 soldiers to Crimea, where they fought alongside their traditional rivals – the British.
The backbone of the French army consisted of the classic line infantry. The soldiers wore the iconic blue tunics and red trousers, which later became a symbol of the French army for many decades.
The armament mainly consisted of older smoothbore muskets, which were converted to percussion locks, but the French soldiers still managed to use them effectively during the fierce battles in Crimea.
