The Russian cavalry was the largest in Europe during the Crimean War and consisted of more than sixty regiments organized into twenty cavalry divisions. Among these were the legendary Cossacks, who served both as light cavalry and light infantry.
The Cossacks were particularly feared for their speed, mobility, and aggressive fighting style. They often acted as scouts and irregular troops, where their ability to move quickly across the battlefield made them extremely valuable. Although they were not always considered as effective in traditional open battles as regular cavalry units, their reputation and fearsome appearance made them a serious threat to any opponent – especially when they charged with lances.
