At the beginning of the 19th century, the situation surrounding scientific development in Britain raised great concerns. "Science is largely dead in England... Perhaps most at our universities" - wrote English journalists.

And then it changed - Provincial Philosophical Societies began to flourish across Britain. They allowed people to meet and listen to lectures on the latest discoveries and inventions.

William Whewell, a historian and philosopher from Cambridge University, became one of the founders of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in 1819. This society ultimately transformed great English universities into the world-leading centers of scientific research they are today. The term "scientist" had not even existed before William Whewell invented it in 1833.

According to several reliable sources, there was only one condition to become a member of the Philosophical Society - applicants had to pass the entrance challenge by opening the mechanical box "Cambridge Labyrinth," invented by the scientist William Whewell.

Now you have the opportunity to take on the challenge that used to be the first step for many inventors into the world of science and engineering!
