In Captain Sonar, as the captain, your crew must operate a submarine with the goal of sinking the enemy captain's submarine. Cooperation and the ability to decode the enemy's orders are essential to win.

This edition of the game is in English.

How to play Captain Sonar:

The players on the two teams in Captain Sonar each have their special tasks - Captain, Radio Operator, Engineer, First Mate - and together the team must maneuver their submarine around, find the enemy, and sink it before the other team does the same.

The game can be played in real-time or turn-based, and there are different maps to play on to vary the game. The game works best with 8 players - but it can be played with 6, in which case the Captain and First Mate are the same person.

The first game is recommended to be played turn-based, meaning both teams wait for each other and thus perform actions one at a time. However, if you're up for a little extra stress and an even cooler experience, you should try playing in real-time, meaning when you start the game, the teams can take their actions as quickly and often as they can communicate them.

The roles work as follows:

  • The Captain is responsible for steering the submarine and announcing details about their team's movements loudly so that the opponents' Radio Operator can hear it. The Captain has the option to use the submarine's systems (Sonar, Drone, Silent, and Torpedo) when they are ready - they are informed by the submarine's First Mate.
The Captain also has the option to dive up with the boat to the surface,
and last but not least, it is the Captain's responsibility to draw the submarine's own route on the map.

  • First Mate keeps an eye on how much damage the submarine has taken. At the same time, they manage the ammunition room, where torpedoes, mines, and other equipment must be prepared before they can be used in combat.

  • Radio Operator handles the sonar for the team, meaning they listen to what the opponents' Captain says and try to locate their submarine. The Radio Operator has a map that is identical to the Captain's, as well as a blank piece of plastic that is placed over the map, on which the opponents' route must be drawn.

  • Engineer keeps track of which parts of the submarine are taking stress and damage. Every time the Captain issues a sailing order, the Engineer must prioritize which area of the submarine takes damage and thus cannot be used until they are repaired.

Captain Sonar includes:

  • 24 Roles
    • 2 First Mates
    • 2 Engineers
    • 10 Captains (1 for each Scenario)
    • 10 Radio Operators  (1 for each Scenario)
  • 2 Blank plastic sheets
  • 8 Markers
  • 2 Screens
