Strong, lavishly equipped, and politically indoctrinated, the SS troops formed over 38 divisions and numerous other regiment and battalion units, totaling nearly a million men in uniform.
Their armored units received much praise for their actions, and although the relationship between regular army units and the Waffen-SS was sometimes strained, most SS units fought against high odds until the wars ended in Berlin, 1945.
The Waffen-SS was a controversial organization - their zeal and discipline could not be questioned, although their many documented atrocities may be what most remember them for.
