Hitler was convinced that it would be a quick task when his German army landed on the Russian border in 1941. Heroic defense from the massive Soviet armies slowed the Nazi advance. The brave, solid, and loyal Soviet soldiers endured terrible combat conditions, and their equipment was unsophisticated but functional, just like the troops themselves.
What they lacked in quality, they compensated for in large numbers of troops and equipment - as Joseph Stalin said "Quantity has a quality all its own."
The cold battles in Finland had taught the Red Army some hard lessons, where thousands of their men fell victim to frostbite. The cold weather kit that was later issued was warm and comfortable, often padded or quilted, and was much envied by the German troops who shivered in thin overcoats.
