The French army began World War II as the world's most powerful army. Well-equipped, with excellent tanks and artillery, the infantry divisions were numerous and confident in their ability to repel the hated Boche, as they had done twenty-two years earlier. However, this was not the same war, and the French infantry soldiers found themselves all too often engaged against German armored units that had outmaneuvered them while the Blitzkrieg rolled across Europe.
It was for the honor of France and their regiments that so many Frenchmen dug in and fought against a more tactically advanced enemy. They persistently fought against the German invaders at battles such as Hannut, Arras, Boulogne, and Saumur.
Many brave Frenchmen continued to fight alongside the Allies with Vichy France, which earned them admiration and disgust in equal measure, while others would return to France with the Allied invasion in 1944 to reclaim their homeland...
