Adolf Hitler led large losses in the attack on Crete during Operation Mercury, and forbade German airborne troops from making further air drops.
Fallschirmjager instead acted as elite infantry, serving in all theaters where Germany fought. They made use of two high rate of fire weapons - the deadly MG42 machine gun for general purposes and the Granatwerfer 34 8 cm medium mortar - which earned them respect from the Allies for their combat ability and honorable actions.
