For to dampen aggression from Germany, Italy, and Japan, Britain and her Commonwealth put a large number of men in uniform during World War II. Her small but professional army was absorbed to defend a global empire, and soon her forces were crushed and in full retreat, culminating in the crushing reverses at Dunkirk and in Singapore. But Britain stoically refused to surrender, and her army was rebuilt and fought back against the Axis powers. The Tommies, as they became known, learned new techniques on the battlefield and by the end of the war were a highly effective fighting force that had fought from the start in 1939 to the war's end in 1945.
