Sent to bolster their beleaguered Italian allies against the combined forces of the British Commonwealth in North Africa, the Deutsches Afrika Korps proved to be a formidable opponent. Under the command of the legendary Erwin Rommel, the Afrika Korps fought a series of fierce battles in Egypt and Libya, as each side pushed the other to the breaking point.
In the midst of what became known as the "Gentleman's War," the German soldier was respected by those he encountered, whether they were British, Australian, Indian, or of other nationalities. German tactics in the desert had a profound and deadly effect on how British armored and infantry formations interacted with one another, and these experiences were utilized in later conflicts in Northwestern Europe.
