"Gold is the lifeblood of the war!"
As the Hun hordes swept across Europe, the Germanic tribes were forced to flee. These warlike people invaded the borders of the Western Roman Empire and would — through plunder and war — ultimately lead to the empire's fall. In the transition between antiquity and the Middle Ages, the so-called barbarian kingdoms arose from the ruins of the old empire.
Barbarian Kingdoms is an asymmetric and competitive strategy game where each player controls their own budding kingdom and fights for dominance over Western Europe.
The first player to control 7 territories or eliminate two enemy kings wins the game.
Each turn, the player chooses and performs one action:
Recruitment – Send out a warrior from the reserve for a fee
Taxation – Collect gold from provinces in your kingdom
Attack – Invade a province or attack an enemy unit
Manoeuvre – Move your troops between provinces or at sea
Claim – Attempt to take control of a province by paying a price
Attack and claim can be immediately challenged by an opponent and lead to combat. During combat, one can bribe their opponent to try to change the outcome.
Players must carefully consider their troop positions (only one unit per province), keep an eye on opponents' movements, and exploit their two asymmetric powers – one from the kingdom and one from the king himself.
A game of power, gold, and survival in a time when civilization teeters on the brink of collapse.
