Yugioh started as a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kazuki Takahashi. The Yu Gi Oh books were published in Japan in 1996 and first reached Denmark in 2004. In the story, we follow the 15-year-old, game-loving boy named Yugi Mutou, who – after many failed attempts – solves the ancient Millennium puzzle, his grandfather Solomon Mutou found many years ago. When this happens, he awakens his inner alter-ego, who is obsessed with playing, but also solves his conflicts through various games.
The manga series later spread across various media, including several spinoff mangas, anime series, a trading card game, and several video games. Most of these representations of Yugioh show the fictional trading card game, which in the series is called 'Duel Monsters'. In this fictional card game, players must duel each other by letting fantasy monsters fight for them. This element in the Yugioh series has formed the basis for and inspiration for the real Yugioh Trading Card Game. Over time, Yugioh became one of the most profitable media franchises ever.
At Card Collective's physical store in Aalborg, Yu Gi Oh is played regularly every week. It takes place as a Swiss tournament, where players are matched according to how many matches they have won. Card Collective is an "Official Tournament Store", so the coveted "Official Tournament Store" packs are also distributed to everyone participating in the tournament. In addition to the regular weekly events, various larger tournaments are also held. See when you can play Yugioh in the store, right here.
Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game is a collectible card game focused on combat. It was developed and published by Konami. The game is largely based on the fictional card game 'Duel Monsters', mentioned in the anime series.
In Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game, players can use cards they have collected to construct decks of 40 to 60 cards. Then they use their decks to face opponents in a game that requires strategy, luck, and skills. New players can advantageously start by learning the game by buying pre-built decks.
Players use a combination of monsters, spells, and traps to tactically reduce their opponent's Life Points. There are currently about 10,000 different Yugioh cards, so it might take some time before one has a complete collection.
Basically, there are 3 types of cards in Yu-Gi-Oh!: Monster, Spell, and Trap cards. Each type affects the course of the game in different ways.
Monster:
Monster cards represent all the different creatures that players summon to attack each other. Monsters have a numerical value for when they are in attack and defense positions. Monsters also have a number of stars, which affect how difficult they are to summon. Monsters with 5 or 6 stars, thus require a "Tribute Summon", where the player must send one of their existing monsters to the graveyard. Monsters with 7 or more stars require the player to tribute two monsters!
Other monsters must be played in more advanced ways, e.g. with ritual summoning, which requires you to play a specific card from your hand, or fusion summoning which requires 2 or more specific monsters that merge into one super powerful monster.
Spell:
These cards are various effects that typically take effect the moment they are played. Spells can provide powerful effects, but can only be played on your own turn. There are different types of spells. Normal Spell is played on your turn for an immediate effect. Continuous Spell remains on the table, and the card's effect is continuously in effect. Equip Spell also remains on the table, but only affects a specific monster. Quick-play Spells are special, as they are played face down, and like traps, they are the only spells that can be activated on the opponent's turn.
Trap:
Trap cards are various kinds of traps, and are unique in that you do not activate the card's effect the moment you play it. Instead, traps are played face down, and can be activated when the conditions on the card are met - Even if it is on the opponent's turn, which is a huge strategic advantage. Trap cards can quickly turn the tide of battle by disrupting the opponent's attack, removing monsters, or ignoring damage.
Exodia the Forbidden One:
In the anime, this monster was Yugi's trump card. Exodia is special, for it is not just a single card, but five different cards; Exodia itself and his arms and legs. If you show your opponent that you have all five cards in your hand you immediately win the game.
Blue-Eyes White Dragon
This white dragon must be said to be one of the most iconic (and cool) monsters in the game. Although it is a normal monster without special effects, it is still the strongest normal monster today with its ATK/3000 and DEF/2500. Over time, new cards have been added that play directly with Blue-Eyes White Dragon, so the card is still relevant.
Slifer the Sky Dragon
One of the most powerful Yugioh cards is the ultra rare card Slifer the Sky Dragon, which is one of the three Egyptian God cards. In the Yu-Gi-Oh! universe, only the Pharaoh's chosen can summon them. The card gives the player 1000 Attack and Defense Points for each card the player has in their hand. It's pretty wild!
