Yu-Gi-Oh! is primarily about the cards, and the main way you acquire a variety of cards for your decks is by opening booster packs.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Boosters

Also called booster packs or just packs, these are the small foil packages that contain new Yu-Gi-Oh! cards. It is the primary way players acquire new cards. A pack from a specific set (or "series") always contains the same number of cards, but which cards you get is random. However, the pool of cards they are drawn from is known, so you know the approximately 100 cards in a set that you have a chance to get in a booster pack.

Yu-Gi-Oh! sets always have several rare cards, which can only be found by being lucky enough to pull them in a booster pack. These could be Ultra Secret Rare cards, or Ghost Rare.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Displays

These are entire unopened boxes of boosters, also sometimes called a "booster box". Displays originate from being intended to be displayed in stores. The advantage of buying an entire display, rather than individual booster packs, is primarily that you get a good savings. The price per pack is less when you buy an entire display, so if you plan to open many packs, this is the best and cheapest solution.
