If you are looking for a fun and relaxing activity that you can enjoy with friends and family, Yatzy is a perfect choice. It is easy to set up and play, it can easily be taken on a trip, and it is challenging enough to keep you engaged. So why not bring a game of Yatzy next time you go on a trip with friends? The game is an excellent way to spend time together while having fun.

Yatzy's Rules

In Yatzy, the aim is to score the most points by rolling the dice and choosing the right combinations. To play, you need 5 dice and a notepad to mark points.

The game's dice rotate among the players, and on their turn, each player has 3 throws with any number of dice. Players can decide which and how many of the dice they want to throw to match one of the game's combinations. You can see the different point-giving combinations below. Each combination can only be used once per player.

If a point cannot be placed because all the block's fields where the throw could be placed are occupied, 0 points are instead written in one of the other fields. The player chooses which field they fill with 0 points. Alternatively, the total number of points can be noted in "Chance".

Each field can only be used once. If a player scores a total of 63 points or more in the top section of the scorecard, they are awarded a bonus of 50 points.

You can learn more about the rules of Yatzy in the video above.

Yatzy Combinations

Below you can see all the different point-giving combinations you can roll in Yatzy:

  • Ones. Here, the goal is to roll as many 1's as possible. Each 1 gives one point.
  • Twos to Sixes. The same rules apply as for the 1's. Each die scores points according to the number of eyes.
  • Bonus. If you score 63 points or more on the top part of the scorecard, you are awarded a 50 points bonus.
  • A pair. Try to roll as high a pair as possible. Number of eyes = number of points.
  • Two pairs. Here you need to roll two different pairs. Preferably as high as possible. Number of eyes = number of points.
  • 3 of a kind. Roll three of a kind. Preferably as high as possible. Number of eyes = number of points.
  • 4 of a kind. Roll four of a kind. Preferably as high as possible. Number of eyes = number of points.
  • Small straight. Roll five dice in the sequence 1-5. Scores 15 points.
  • Large straight. Roll five dice in the sequence 2-6. Scores 20 points.
  • Full house. A pair and three of a kind. The pair and the three of a kind must be different. Number of eyes = number of points.
  • Chance. If a dice roll cannot be used in any of the other fields, you can add the sum of the eyes in the "Chance" field.
  • Yatzy. A roll where all dice show the same number of eyes. Scores points = number of eyes plus a bonus of 50 points.
