Topps, an iconic giant within the sports card industry, has enchanted fans around the world for decades with their legendary basketball cards. These miniature works of art are more than just paper; they are time capsules that capture moments from some of the most memorable times in basketball history. Topps first entered the basketball scene in 1957 and has since released a variety of basketball series, documenting numerous highlights. In 2026, they will have the opportunity to take this to new heights, as they have secured the license to produce NBA cards – we therefore have many exciting series and cards to look forward to!
Types of Topps basketball cards:
Like their other series, Topps basketball cards can be divided into different types. Some are easier to get than others and the rarer a card type is, the more it can also be worth:
-
Base cards: These are the most common of all cards and form the foundation of any collection. These cards present the players with portraits and their statistics.
-
Autograph cards: Autograph cards are highly sought after and often very rare. These cards either have a print of the player's autograph or have a real autograph signed on the front. Therefore, not many of these cards are usually printed.
-
Rookie cards: Rookie cards capture new players' first moments on the professional scene. This means that the cards can contain future legends and rookie cards are therefore very sought after and rare.
-
Limited Edition: For dedicated collectors, there can be a sport in chasing limited edition versions of player cards. These are produced in a limited run and can therefore be hard to get hold of. This is especially true if you come across a numbered card.
