Ticket to Ride is an ultra-popular board game about railway infrastructure developed and designed by Alan R. Moon, with well-known illustrations drawn by Julien Delval and Cyrille Daujean. The game was first published in 2004 and has since won several awards including the Spiel des Jahres 2004.
During the game, players must collect colored train cards and place their trains on the game board to connect cities and fulfill routes indicated on their cards. The longer and more complex the routes, the more points can be scored. Careful thinking is required, as it can be difficult to complete all one's routes, as opponents will also try to build their own networks and block your routes.
At the beginning of the game, all players receive four train car cards and three ticket cards. The ticket cards show a destination on the map (i.e., the game board). These destinations become the goal of your journey, and you must secretly try to connect your route to them. You must always keep two destination cards and discard any unwanted cards.
Once you have chosen which cards to keep, these must be kept for the rest of the game. The game ends when a player has only two or fewer train pieces left. When this happens, all players get to take one last turn, after which the secret destinations are revealed. Extra points are awarded to the player who has managed to connect their starting point with their destination – and similarly, points are deducted if the goal was not achieved. A total of ten points are awarded to the player who has the longest continuous route. There are many ways to score points and even if you are ahead, you must be careful not to sabotage your own efforts, as your opponents can quickly overtake you by scoring points in ways other than you have focused on.
Since the original game, a plethora of new base games and Map Collections have been released, as numerous as the planets in the solar system. Base games like Ticket to Ride Europe, Nordic Countries, and Rails & Sails can be played separately without the need for other games in the series. The various Map Collections such as Asia, India, and France add new maps to play on, but therefore require one of the base games.
If you are looking for an entertaining and challenging board game, Ticket to Ride is definitely one you should try. It is not only fun and engaging, but it is also a perfect way to spend time with friends and family. Find the version of the game that suits you and embark on an unforgettable journey on rails through the whole world.
