If painted miniatures are the most important thing to be able to play Warhammer 40,000, then painted terrain must come in a close second. The terrain serves fundamentally two different purposes. Thematically, it helps to tell the story of brave warriors, demons, and aliens fighting desperate and epic battles on alien worlds far out in the galaxy. Certain terrain can even tell a specific story. Perhaps the two factions are fighting over who can control a radar station, which will give them a strategic advantage in future battles?
But the terrain is also absolutely essential for the game's rules, as your units can take cover behind the terrain, or even be completely hidden. The terrain in Warhammer 40,000 thus makes the game much more exciting and strategic than if two armies just met on a flat battlefield.
