Here is everything you need to know about dice!

Dice have a long history, dating back to ancient times. The earliest preserved dice found come from ancient Egypt around 3000 BC, but it is likely that dice have been in use for much longer than that.

In ancient times, dice were used to determine fate and to play games. In the Roman Empire, dice were also used to determine punishments and rewards in the military.

Dice have also been a part of the culture in many other societies through time. For example, dice were used in China over 2000 years before our era, and they have been part of many other cultures' traditions and games through time.

Today, dice are still an important part of many board games, role-playing games, and miniature games. Most games include the dice needed, but some games require you to provide your own dice.

Role-playing Dice

In many role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder, you need a variety of dice throughout a game, depending on which character you are playing as. The most important die is the 20-sided die, commonly known as D20. When you need to pass various tests in the game, it is a D20 that determines your success and in combat, it decides who gets to strike first and whether you hit or miss. Once you have hit your opponent, the other dice come into play.

The 12-sided die (D12) is primarily used to determine damage from the strongest weapons, or to decide how much life various monsters or characters have. The D10 is used similarly to the D12, but sometimes the Game Master might also need to roll a percentage, for which he can use two D10s. The 8-sided die is used, like the others, to determine damage. It is quite frequently used, as it is often used by one-handed weapons, which means the other hand is free to hold a shield. Finally, there is the classic 6-sided die, used to determine damage caused by weapons or spells. Finally, there are D4s, which determine damage for the smallest weapons and spells.

Dice for Magic

In both Magic the Gathering and other games, you sometimes need to keep track of how much life or points you have. Instead of keeping records on a piece of paper, you can conveniently use dice. Just turn the die to change the number, or add/remove a die as needed. You might also need to place markers on your cards. Here, a simple die is also an elegant and more manageable solution, rather than placing many individual markers on them.

In addition to traditional 6-sided dice, there are also special spin-down dice, specifically designed to keep track of life in Magic. It is a 20-sided die, but instead of the numbers being spread out, the numbers are next to each other in numerical order. This makes it easy, for example, to go from 20 to 17 life without having to turn the entire die around to find the right number.

Dice for Miniature Games
