Technical

Here you will find our extensive selection of technical "paint" from Citadel. These containers hold paint with special effects. Among the Technical products, you will find options to create realistic blood, rust, slime, or sparkling gemstones. You can also make beautiful, realistic bases that resemble sand, mud, cracked desert, or snow – just to name a few examples.

HeaderMore about Citadel (paint)BlockText2

Citadel Miniatures Limited is a British company that produces metal, resin, and plastic miniatures for miniature-based war games such as Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, which was later replaced by Warhammer Age of Sigmar. Previously, Citadel Miniatures was an independent company, but in 1979 it became a brand for another British game company, namely Games Workshop. In addition to miniatures, Citadel also produces paint and various accessories and tools for wargames and the miniature painting process.

Types of Paint

Citadel paint comes in containers designed so you can dip your brush directly into the lid, making it easy and quick to paint without waste. Citadel paint is available in different types that are each suited for specific stages and techniques when painting miniatures. Below is an introduction to the different types of Citadel paint.

Base:

Base paint is the foundation of the traditional way of painting miniatures. It is intended to be the first layer of color you apply to your miniatures. Paint of this type has a particularly high amount of pigments, which means they cover with a single layer. The result is a uniform color with a matte finish, suitable for painting over when you need to add highlights and shadows.

Layer:

Layer paint has fewer pigments than the base colors, allowing you to apply them in several thin layers over the base colors. This way, you can build up the color and really highlight the details on your miniatures. Citadel Layer paint is also suitable for 'edge highlighting', where you highlight edges with a thin line.

Shade:

Shade paint is very thin and is intended to add shadows to your miniatures. They are designed to run into the recesses of the miniature and provide a beautiful result.

Metallics:

This type of paint contains real metal pigments, and therefore they are suitable for painting weapons and armor. Remember to change the water in your painting cup when you have used Metallics paint.

Dry:

These colors have a much thicker consistency than other Citadel colors. They are therefore suitable for 'drybrushing', where you let the brush lightly brush over the miniature, so only the most highlighted parts receive paint. This method is especially used for surfaces with a lot of texture such as fur, hair, or gravel.

Contrast:

Citadel Contrast paint is an innovative way to paint miniatures. Instead of painting a base color and adding light and shadows yourself, you can apply one thick layer of paint over a miniature that is primed white. When the Contrast color dries, it will settle dark in the folds and light in highlighted structures. It is a fantastic way to paint miniatures easily and quickly. We recommend priming with a Wraithbone Spray or Grey Seer Spray before painting with Contrast.

Technical:

These containers hold paint with special effects. Among the Technical products, you will find options to create realistic blood, rust, slime, or sparkling gemstones. You can also make beautiful, realistic bases that resemble sand, mud, cracked desert, or snow – just to name a few examples.

Air:

All Air colors correspond to a color that already exists among Citadel's paint types. The difference is that Citadel Air has a thinner consistency, making it suitable for airbrush use.
