Pokémon is a contraction of 'Pocket Monsters'. It is a Japanese media franchise that was founded by Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures and created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995. Pokémon involves fictional creatures (called Pokémon), which humans – better known as Pokémon trainers – must try to catch and train for battle against each other.
Today, the Pokémon franchise covers a plethora of video games, plush toys, toys, merchandise, and most importantly – the card game. The game was first released in Japan in 1999 and has since taken the world by storm.
In the roles of Pokémon trainers, players use their Pokémon cards, each with different strengths and weaknesses, to try to overcome their opponent by knocking out their Pokémon. Pokémon are played on the table to attack the opponent's Pokémon, and when a Pokémon has taken enough damage, it is knocked out. The player who knocked out the respective Pokémon may take a Prize card. There are several ways to win the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Primarily, one can win by obtaining all (usually) six Prize cards. Another way to win is by knocking out all of the opponent's Pokémon so that they have none left on the table, or if the opponent at the beginning of their turn has no more cards left in their deck. You can watch the video below for a quick walkthrough of the game.

There are many different types of card types in Pokémon. To play, you need to have a good mix of different types of cards in your deck.
Many who collect Pokémon cards specifically look for rare cards. If you are looking for rare and valuable Pokémon cards, there are a few things you should be on the lookout for. Most cards are classified into common, uncommon, and rare cards. These are marked with different symbols in one corner of the card – respectively a circle, a diamond, and a star. It is usually only rare cards that have a chance of being valuable. In the video below, you can see what you should be looking for:
The most valuable cards are often those that feature popular characters like Charizard, Eevee, and Pikachu. It is therefore not surprising that the world's most expensive Pokémon card is a PSA10 Pikachu Illustrator card, which was sold in 2021 for 36.5 million kroner. Because Pokémon cards can potentially be worth a lot of money, there are also many fake cards in circulation. Most fake cards come into circulation when cheap cards are bought abroad. It is therefore important to only buy cards from trustworthy dealers. You can learn more about how to spot fake cards in the video below:
There are many products with Pokémon cards and it can therefore be a challenge to figure out where to start. The easiest place is with boosters (also called Pokémon card packs) and displays. Booster packs contain 10 random cards and are the smallest packs you can get. A Booster display contains 36 boosters and is therefore one of the cheapest ways to quickly get a large collection of cards. In addition to these, there are a number of other products:
Another aspect that also influences a Pokémon card's value is how good it is to play with. The better a card is, the more sought after it is and therefore the price also becomes higher. The world's best Pokémon cards are hard to define. This is partly because new cards are constantly being printed and there is rotation in which cards are allowed to be played in official tournaments. It is therefore often easier to talk about which Pokémon generally have good cards. Good examples of this are Gardevoir and Mewtwo, as many of the cards with these Pokémon on them often end up being used in tournaments.
