In KeyForge, you must be the first player to forge your three keys. A KeyForge deck contains three "houses", each with its own theme. Each turn, you must choose a house. You can then only play cards from that house for the rest of the turn. There is no "casting cost" as known from games like Magic the Gathering and others. You must now harvest "æmber" by tapping your miniatures or playing cards that give you æmber. If you have six æmber at the start of your turn, you may forge a key. Therefore, it can be beneficial to destroy your opponent's creatures. You can do this either by fighting them with your own creatures or by playing action cards that deal damage.

KeyForge is a great game because it is so easy to get into. You can start your first game in just a few minutes, all you need is a KeyForge deck and an opponent. KeyForge is incredibly well-thought-out and balanced. The designer behind it is none other than Richard Garfield, who is behind the collectible card game classic Magic the Gathering. With KeyForge, he has created a game that is incredibly easy for new players to get into and at the same time hits the mark with many experienced collectible card players. KeyForge has a good dose of humor, both in the automatically generated names of the decks, as well as in the images and flavor text on the individual cards. Unlike Magic, you don't need to spend time on deck construction, so the total amount of time you need to invest in KeyForge is significantly less. This means you can have KeyForge as a hobby and play at a high level without having to dedicate most of your free time to it.
