When we talk about tabletop role-playing games, there's one title most people know: Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons, originating from 1974, is based on early war games with tin soldiers. D&D is widely recognized as the progenitor not only of tabletop role-playing games but of most of the role-playing genre. On this page, you can learn more about D&D, see the products we have, and hear more about what we can do for you in the Tabletop Role-Playing Games category at Card Collective.

As mentioned, Dungeons and Dragons is based on traditional miniature war games, but where D&D really stands out is that each player controls their own character instead of a whole troop of soldiers. These characters embark on adventures in a fantasy world. During their journeys, they become more skilled and gain experience, measured in XP. An essential person in any D&D game is the Dungeon Master. The Dungeon Master doesn't have their own character but is the person who narrates the story and decides what happens, as well as managing the game's other miniatures and monsters. The game is played both as a kind of verbal improvised drama and on a game board, where combat sequences take place. Here, the Dungeon Master and players do not compete against each other but collaborate to create an exciting story with the players' characters in the leading roles.
Dungeons & Dragons is an exciting universe, filled with fearsome monsters and enigmatic challenges. D&D is truly a game where participants practice their teamwork, deduction skills, social skills, and last but not least, use their imagination. There are now tabletop role-playing games in all sorts of variations, but Dungeons and Dragons still stands strong. D&D is a timeless universe, appealing to both adults and children. Over time, a wealth of literature set in the D&D universe has also been published, allowing for deep immersion into the world. The races and environments are largely based on descriptions by Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings. Therefore, Dungeons & Dragons is relatively simple for newcomers, which is also facilitated by a set of basic rules that are easy to understand. At the same time, the game is sufficiently complicated and nuanced to keep experienced players engaged. A big part of this is that you can highly individualize your character, and there is a variety of exciting races and classes to choose from when building your character.
In 2024, D&D celebrates its 50th anniversary with new updated versions of the three core books: Dungeon Master's Guide, Player's Handbook, and Monster Manual. These three books feature a revised rule set based on feedback Wizards of the Coast has received since the beginning of DnD 5th Edition.
The goal with the new rules is to make the game faster, more fun, and even easier to learn. However, this does not mean that you can no longer use your old 5th edition books. The three new core books are designed to be backward compatible with all previous 5th edition releases.
The three new books will be released staggered. The first will be the new Player's Handbook, expected on September 17, 2024. After that comes the Dungeon Master's Guide on November 12, 2024, and finally, a new Monster Manual on February 18, 2025.
At Card Collective, we have a wide selection of D&D rulebooks with various scenarios and long campaigns. Here are also books that set the game in other well-known universes such as Ravnica from Magic the Gathering or Wildemount from Critical Role. We also have D&D cards, which are used as a sort of reference guide, and are easier to handle and more manageable than sitting with a large rulebook every time you need to look something up. Additionally, we have miniatures and everything you need to paint them (see here and here). You can also buy D&D game mats, which are easy to roll up and store.
At Card Collective, we are happy to help you and your friends get off to a good start, with guidance on what you need to play your first game of Dungeons and Dragons. Therefore, we have created a guide for new players which you can see here or if you are going to be a dungeon master for the first time, you can find some advice and guidance here.
